Smurfs High Five

Contenders for December 13, 2016

Wonder Woman #12> “YEAR ONE” part five! The threat is named, and now Wonder Woman and her new allies must rise to meet the coming darkness. (S) Greg Rucka (A) Nicola Scott

Scooby Apocalypse #8> Escaping Mall-Mart took a toll on Scooby and friends-particularly on Fred, whose broken leg needs more attention than the Mystery Machine’s rinky-dink first aid kit can provide. The gang needs to find a hospital stat-but Velma would rather let Fred’s leg crumble to dust than fight more bloodthirsty creatures. But wait-are those paramedics? Nurses? Are they at least friendly? No? Really? (S) Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis (A) Howard Porter

Smurfs Take> I love that Fred is just becoming the whipping boy in the series. Great twists and turns, the most solid revamp of a series to date.

Guardians of the Galaxy #15> GROUNDED! The Guardians of the Galaxy are stuck on Earth! They’re also not necessarily a team anymore. What’s an urban spaceman supposed to do? (S) Brian Michael Bendis (A) Valerio Schiti

Flash #12> “SPEED OF DARKNESS” part three! Time is running out for The Flash and Kid Flash as they race to help the Shade regain control of the Shadowlands, the dimension of pure darkness from which the Shade draws his terrible power, before it reaches our world and consumes the light forever. (S) Joshua Williamson (A) Carmine Di Giandomenico

Old Man Logan #15> WHEN IN ROMANIA, DO AS THE ROMANIANS DO – STAKE VAMPIRES! It’s up to LOGAN and the greatest supernatural hero squad the world has ever seen, the HOWLING COMMANDOS, to stop DRACULA from a dastardly plot that endangers the whole world. But when JUBILEE is in trouble, can the Commandos trust Logan to make the tough calls? (S) Jeff Lemire (A) Filipe Andrade

Smurfs Pick

Suicide Squad #8> “THE BLACK VAULT” part eight! Harley Quinn goes sane! The prisoners and staff of Belle Reve Penitentiary have succumbed to the devastating effects of General Zod’s Black Vault, rendering them all insane. But it has the opposite effect on Harley, who must fight her way through a crazed Suicide Squad-with the help of the Enchantress-to stop Zod from waking and conquering the world. No pressure, right? And in a bonus backup story written by Rob Williams with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Francesco Mattina, learn how super-villains are conscripted into the Suicide Squad! The unlucky Killer Frost is about to find out when she arrives for her first day at Belle Reve. Her story continues from this month’s single issue of SUICIDE SQUAD directly into JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. SUICIDE SQUAD #1! (S) Rob Williams (A) Jim Lee, Scott Williams

Smurfs Take> If you told me that Deadshot would be a character that I cared about and would have his own action figure back in the day I would have laughed and called you a damn lie to your face. Who would have known. The character is solid, all of them are, the story is engaging, and best of all you are cheering on the bad guy. Great jumping on point for story and the Jim Lee at the pencils can never go wrong. Do not leave this behind because you will only kick yourself later for doing it.

Trade Paperback of the Week

Batman TP Vol 9 Bloom> As the new Batman, former police commissioner Jim Gordon is in for the fight of his life against the bizarre threat of Mr. Bloom, who controls the underworld in Gotham City! At the same time, an amnesiac Bruce Wayne has discovered the truth of his past as the Dark Knight-and now he must descend into the Batcave and reclaim that painful legacy. Don’t miss the latest helping of Dark Knight tales from issues #46-50 and a story from DETECTIVE COMICS #27.  (S) Scott Snyder, James TynionIV (A) Yanick Paquette, Sean Murphy (A/CA) Greg Capullo, Danny Miki

Statue of the Week

DC Designer Series Harley By Bruce Timm Statue> Designed by BRUCE TIMM
Sculpted by JONATHAN MATTHEWS
The sheer wackiness of Harley Quinn, former girlfriend of The Joker and all-around whack-job, is captured in this statue in the style of her co-creator, legendary animator Bruce Timm.
Limited Edition of 5,200
Measures Approximately 12.75″ Tall

Smurfs Take> I love the original Black and White version of this statue, and to have it in a color version is a stroke of genius. Classic suit and the one we all know her for from the animated series, this will always remain my most favorite version of Harley.

Video of the Week

Suicide Squad> In the DC Comics universe, there are some jobs that are too dirty for the likes of Batman and Superman. When that happens, the government turns to the Suicide Squad, a collection of the worst criminals formed into a black ops team that’s set loose into situations where the United States has to deny involvement. With a team that includes the likes of Headshot, Killer Croc, the Enchantress, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn, not everyone is expected to survive the mission. Throw in a brand new take on Harley’s on again, off again boyfriend, the Joker, and the mission is sure to devolve into chaos and bloodshed.

Smurfs Take> Better than I though it would be and we get the cut moments of the Joker in the Blu Ray. Would it have made the difference and moved the movie from good to great?
