#NewComicsDay is here as Smurf jets towards New York Comic Con but he made sure you wouldn’t be left unprepared for what is hitting the shelves at the local shop. His #top5 picks are sponsored by All C’s Fan Expo that is going on next week with free admission.
Ghost Rider #1> ALL HELLS BREAK LOOSE!
The Brothers Ghost Rider are back! Johnny Blaze ain’t just the king of Hell-he’s the warden too. He’s the first line of defense between the demonic hordes trying to escape the joint and the lords of other hells making a play for his throne and all the power that comes with it – including a certain evil queen from his past! Meanwhile, Danny Ketch never wanted to be a Ghost Rider. Now that his brother’s in charge downstairs, Ketch must take on the duty of Earth’s Spirit of Vengeance full-time-no matter how much he’d rather be doing anything else… Superstar creative team ED BRISSON (EXTERMINATION) and AARON KUDER (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) redefine the Marvel Universe’s supernatural underbelly for a brutal new era! PLUS: the first installment of the Caretaker Chronicles! Forget everything you thought you knew! (S) Ed Brisson (A/CA) Aaron Kuder
Smurfs Take> Well it’s about time and just in time for October! At long last it’s the return of Danny Ketch! I like Blaze don’t get me wrong and he has continued to show up over the last few years but there have always been questions to Danny’s fate. I for one would be more interested in Danny taking over the story and leaving Blaze as a secondary character but I will take a good Ghost Rider story over any of that. The potential for this character and story are limitless.
Dceased #5> The world is dying at the hands of the infected, and the very survival of humanity is at stake. Facing extinction, Superman and the heroes will make a decision that will fundamentally alter Earth’s present…and future! (S) Tom Taylor (A) Trevor Hairsine, Stefano Guadiano (CA) Joshua Middleton
Smurfs Take> This has been a pleasant hit and not what I was expecting from DC. Especially with the likes of Doomsday Clock and Heroes in Crisis going on at the same time with it being on the rather dark side but so good and one series I definitely suggest to get in deluxe hardcover edition.
Batman #80> The bad guys thought they had it made with Bane in control, but with Batman back in Gotham they’ll be reminded what justice feels like… and how it hurts when it hits you in the face. With Catwoman at his side, the Caped Crusader is looking to take down Bane’s army and reclaim his city. But what happens when old allies like Gotham Girl also stand in his way? The legendary art team of John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson join BATMAN for two action-packed issues that will rock Gotham City to its foundation. (S) Tom King (A/CA) John RomitaJr, Klaus Janson
Smurfs Take> I was explaining this story the other day and I realized just how involved and invested I truly am in it. It’s pulled me in so much I feel like I live in Gotham. There have been some stellar reveals, every issue building off the last adding to the suspense and flowing so seamlessly together. This is one time I don’t want it to end.
Manifest Destiny #37> Spring has sprung and the Corps of Discovery is closing in on the Pacific! But new beginnings mean new horrors for Lewis and Clark, and out on the American plains a sleeping beast has awoken! (S) Chris Dingess (A) Matthew Roberts (A) Owen Gieni
Smurfs Take> It feels like it’s been forever since I saw the last issue. The whole premise behind this story is absolutely brilliant and carries the same feeling of the old horror comics. If you have never picked this up you should just for something fresh and different to cleanse your superhero palate.
Green Lantern #12> The Green Lanterns will fall! Insidious plans meticulously set in motion since issue #1 have reached their boiling point. As defeat looms for the Corps, Hal Jordan’s showdown with his monstrous antimatter counterpart sets the stage for the final pages of this issue-and the moment that will echo throughout the entire DC Universe! How bad is it for Hal and the Corps? There’s no GREEN LANTERN #13 next month…but writer Grant Morrison is crafting the next chapter of this story, and it’s coming soon! Only there’s no “Green Lantern” in the title. After the events of this issue, how could there be? (S) Grant Morrison (A/CA) Liam Sharp
Smurfs Take> One of the most unique and original story lines for the Green Lantern in a very long time and I loved every single moment of it. The tale that Morrison has weaved is without a doubt spectacular and I can’t wait to see how he wraps it all up. More importantly what he has coming in the next installment of this inspired Opera?
