#NewComicsDay Smurf here taking over the intro from my admin this week and to honest it’s a very full week. I have to say this has been one of the more difficult weeks with all of the great stories going on. The only one I fear for is the new 2099 series and that’s because of Nick Spencer who runs hot or cold with me. My #Top5 is sponsored by All C’s Collectibles, so get out there, pick with confidence, and always stay geeky.
Batman White Knight Presents Von Freeze #1> The world of Batman: White Knight expands with this standalone tale! On the night of Bruce Wayne’s traumatic birth, Victor Fries must intervene to save the lives of Martha Wayne and the future Batman. As the evening unfolds, Victor distracts Thomas with the incredible tale of his own father figures-one a Nazi, the other a Jew-and their complex connection to Wayne Laboratories. As the Third Reich roars into power, the deep friendship and working relationship between the Baron von Fries and his research partner, Jacob Smithstein, is in crisis. Ordered by Himmler to speed development of their cryotechnology in service of world domination, Smithstein is forced to go into hiding and compromise his moral code in order to save his wife and infant daughter, Nora, from persecution and certain death. When the S.S. ramps up surveillance over the project, young Victor begins to question his father’s true allegiance. Both families are driven toward an impossible choice and a sinister standoff, and Victor makes a pact with Smithstein that will ripple through generations. (S) Sean Murphy (A) Klaus Janson (CA) Sean Murphy
Smurfs Take> Any world building for this title is welcomed! I have been hooked since issue one and I don’t see that changing. Murphy has done an absolute stellar job with this series both in art and story and I want more. His take on the characters designs are new and sharp yet comfortable. Not to mention Freeze is one of my favorite villains.
Annihilation Scourge Alpha #1> THE OPENING SALVO FOR DECEMBER’S MAIN EVENT!
Something is stirring in the Negative Zone…something that the Marvel Universe isn’t ready for! Will Nova be able to assemble a team powerful enough to tackle this burgeoning threat, or is it already too late to stop its descent upon the galaxy? For the Cosmos’s greatest heroes, ANNIHILATION is only the beginning… (S) Matthew Rosenberg (A) Juanan Ramirez (CA) Josemaria Casanovas
Smurfs Take> I have always thought Marvel has never used the Negative Zone to its fullest potential. They could pull just about any dark nasty creature they could think of out it but haven’t. I’m also excited to see Nova back in the mix who has been neglected by Marvel as well meaning this could be an amazing December event.
He Man and the Masters of the Multiverse #1> The scourge of Anti-Eternia is unleashed on the Multiverse! Blazing a trail across the dimensions, he’s devastating each version of Eternia and stealing its power. Now it’s up to a ragtag team of surviving He-Men to recruit the one man in existence who might save them: Prince Keldor, the man who would be Skeletor! This all-new miniseries features the most iconic eras and beloved takes on the Masters of the Universe! (S) Tim Seeley (A) Dan Fraga, Richard Friend (CA) In-Hyuk Lee
Smurfs Take> Leave it to DC to add the Multiverse to the Masters of the Universe. I love the idea behind this story and let’s face it we all want more Skeletor. I like that they have expanded the He Man world and developed a lot of the back stories to the characters. It’s a title loaded with imagination that isn’t restricted by years of continuity and it’s just fun.
Batman Superman #4> Even from prison, the Batman Who Laughs is staying two steps ahead of the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel. His plan to infect heroes and turn them into the Dark Multiverse versions of themselves is starting to build steam, with Shazam and others already succumbing to his evil toxin. Batman and Superman are racing the clock to prevent the other three members of the Secret Six from being poisoned, but they realize they are too late when those three come looking for them instead-one of whom is a lot closer to Superman than expected and itching for a fight! (S) Joshua Williamson (A) David Marquez (CA) Emanuela Lupacchino
Smurfs Take> Hit after hit after hit for this title for me and the overall story going on in DC right now and is a runaway train of entertainment. I want more and I’m eager to see who goes dark next but to be honest it doesn’t get any better than a pack of Robins on chains.
Avengers #26> A PREHISTORIC SAVAGE… WITH THE POWER OF THE STARS!
Legendary artist Dale Keown (The Incredible Hulk) is here to unleash the secret, savage origin of the biggest, nastiest, most cosmically-powered caveman who ever lived: the original Starbrand, one of the mighty Avengers of One Million B.C. (S) Jason Aaron (A/CA) Dale Keown
Smurfs Take> Solid book, love the team, love what Jason Aaron has done and now add Dale Keown there is no stopping its potential. Keown’s work amazing and this might be the closest we get to him doing a Hulk again. Do not skip this book!
Dark Knights Metal Batman The Red Death Statue> In this fourth massive collection of the hit 1980s series, team member Lilith ascends to godhood and takes up residence on Olympus, home of the Greek gods of myth. And as the Crisis on Infinite Earths begins, Starfire is called home to the planet Tamaran to be wed to a member of the military. Collects NEW TEEN TITANS Series Two #10-31, NEW TEEN TITANS Series Two ANNUAL #1-2 and a story from OMEGA
Smurfs Take> The series I didn’t know I needed till it was there. Everyone so far has been a hit and look terrific and even better with a set of them. Must haves without a doubt.
