Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay is here and Smurfs High Five is sponsored by All C’s Collectibles. A lighter pull this week but still plenty to read no matter what your tastes might be. After looking at Smurfs #Top5 also check out Captain America the End and X-Men VS. Fantastic Four.

In the shattering climax of The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader infamously reveals his true relationship to Luke Skywalker and invites his son to rule the galaxy at his side. But Luke refuses — plunging into the abyss beneath Cloud City rather than turn to the Dark Side. We all remember Luke’s utter horror in this life-altering moment. But what about Vader? In this new epic chapter in the Darth Vader saga, the dark lord grapples with Luke’s unthinkable refusal and embarks on a bloody mission of rage-filled revenge against everything and everyone who had a hand in hiding and corrupting his only son. But even as he uncovers the secrets of Luke’s origins, Vader must face shocking new challenges from his own dark past.
Writer Greg Pak and artist Raffaele Ienco unleash Darth Vader on his dark quest of vengeance and discovery this February! With covers by InHyuk Lee! (S) Greg Pak (A) Raffaele Ienco (CA) In-Hyuk Lee

Smurfs Take> I know with a new story comes new numbering and I really hate that trend. What I do like is where in the timeline it’s taking place and I think opens up a ton of potential stories. Most of the Vader stories have been great and have expanded the character in ways you could never do in film. Lets face it, Empire is the best of the trilogy and any way to add to that story is welcomed….I hope.

great power 1Immortal Hulk Great Power #1> THE HULK FINDS A NEW HOST: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!
When Bruce Banner wakes up in the middle of the night without the Hulk, he thinks he’s finally free. But the Hulk is immortal – and the night’s not over yet. If you thought he was dangerous in the body of mild-mannered Bruce Banner, wait till you see him now. Peter Parker is a man with the proportional strength and agility of a spider, capable of lifting trains on his bad days. And he’s about to get a big, green power-up – with a temper to match. (S) Tom Taylor (A/CA) Jorge Molina

Smurfs Take> You know that must be weird to just wake up one morning and be the Hulk, like you got the worst case of bird flu ever. Had no idea the Hulks powers could jump around like that but looks like a fun read. Immortal Hulk has been amazing as it goes more towards the darker and horror side and I hope they continue that trend here.

batman 88Batman #88> The conspiracy that will rock Batman’s world continues to unfold as the Dark Knight travels to Arkham Asylum to get answers from the Penguin! What dark secret does he share with The Joker, the Riddler, and…Catwoman? Plus, the plague of assassins descending upon Gotham City in its weakest moments continues! Will this be the moment when Deathstroke finally takes down Batman?! (S) James TynionIV (A) Guillem March (CA) Tony S. Daniel

Smurfs Take> I really like when Batman gets to be a detective. We know he has all the gadgets, and able to take just about anyone in a fight but seem to overlook the detective part. It’s refreshing and I love the suspense.

justice league 40Justice League #40> The next chapter for comics’ premier superteam begins! An unexpected arrival from the stars brings a dire warning to the Justice League: A new breed of conquerors is on the march. Led by Superman’s nemesis Eradicator, a genetically engineered, super-powered strike team has come to subjugate Earth. To aid the Justice League, Batman makes the unprecedented decision of enlisting an ancient, unrivaled power, which calls into question who, exactly, is in charge. With the League on unsure footing, will they be ready to save the world? (S) Robert Venditti (A) Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza (CA) Bryan Hitch

Smurfs Take> Issue 39 was a strong finish and I have to tip my hat to the whole creative team. I haven’t enjoyed Justice League that much since the early 2000’s. Now we start a whole new team and story, great place to jump on and looks to be just as solid. I think the Eradicator to kick thing off is a stellar idea, something different new direction and I like that.

conan crown 1Conan Battle for the Serpent Crown #1> A DEADLY QUEST AND A DARING HEIST… IN THE AGE OF MARVELS!
CONAN wanders the desert, and as he reaches the city, no Stygian temple nor Vendyhan fortress greets him.  No, something far stranger: the lights of fabulous Las Vegas!  Conan is far from home, and it’s time for him to tread the thrones of the Marvel Universe under his sandaled feet!
The City of Sin is just the beginning for Conan’s solo jaunt by Eisner award-winner Saladin Ahmed (BLACK BOLT, MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN) and Luke Ross (STAR WARS: ALLEGIANCE, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN), as the barbarian finds himself on a quest for a relic that predates even his Hyborian Age: the Serpent Crown of Atlantis!  But will his battle for this crown earn Conan his own kingdom, or doom him to a nefarious trap set forth by MEPHISTO?  Featuring a wide array of Marvel heroes and villains, this is an adventure you can’t afford to miss! (S) Saladin Ahmed (A) Luke Ross (CA) Mahmud A. Asrar

Smurfs Take> I know Marvel is hard pressed to loop Conan into the active universe and Savage Avengers has been a fun read (Also hitting shelves today). I just hope they don’t get too carried away with the whole thing but come on Conan in Vegas is classic.
