Meat and Potatoes

do-the-right-thing-poster-cropWanted to just recommend a *Great Movie* this week that is available everywhere because there are no new movies and movie theaters are still closed. Plus, with the climate of unrest right now I wanted to revisit one of the most powerful movies of its time or any time actually, Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” is a masterpiece in film and it still holds up today. Especially today.

*The MEAT* The story puts you right in the middle of a day in the life of a poor black New York City neighborhood on an extremely hot day in the late eighties. Produced, written and directed by a young Spike Lee “Do the Right Thing” is one of the best examples of how a movie just draws you into a world that totally captivates you with its subject matter and humor.

*The POTATOES* The acting here is *Off the Charts Good* because you will recognize almost everyone in every scene. The cast was a bunch of young actors that all went on to bigger careers and even some are household names now.

*The VERDICT* One of the most famous film critics, the late great Roger Ebert once wrote “Most movies remain up there on the screen. Only a few penetrate your soul.” He was talking about “Do the Right Thing”. Other critics at the time did not really know how to take this film because it is so racially charged and offers an ending with no solutions or answers to the problems it laid out so, I believe it didn’t get the credit it truly deserved (like Best Picture) at the time. But I will say it will leave you with an understanding that you do not understand and will absolutely challenge your thoughts afterwards. If that makes any kind of sense to you then maybe, just maybe it will help you cope with today’s world a little better.
