Batman #98> “The Joker War” part four of six! Batman is at his most vulnerable following a massive dose of an experimental new Joker toxin. With the Dark Knight haunted by demons and visions, it’s up to Harley Quinn to protect him while he recovers-because Punchline is on her way! (S) James Tynion IV (A) Jorge Jimenez
Smurfs Take> A story that has a lot going on and a ton of characters on both sides to keep track of. I really don’t know where we are going with this one as situations continue to get worse for the bat and Gotham. I’m expecting a big plot reveal soon to help tie it all together as we close in on the finish line. Never expected Harley to play as big a role in the story as she has and wondering if this is leading to something larger.
Black Widow #1> Best-selling, Eisner-nominated writer Kelly Thompson (CAPTAIN MARVEL, STAR) and rising star artist Elena Casagrande (Catwoman) launch a new BLACK WIDOW series that changes everything! Natasha Romanoff has been a spy almost as long as she’s been alive. And she’s never stopped running, whether she was working for the good guys…or the bad. But Natasha’s world is about to be upended. Beyond San Francisco’s Golden Gate lies a mystery that only the Marvel Universe’s greatest spy can solve. Don’t miss the heartbreaking thrill ride of 2020! (S) Kelly Thompson (A) Elena Casagrande (CA) Adam Hughes
Smurfs Take> If there is a Marvel character that deserves a great story it’s the Black Widow. I know the last few series for the character have fell a little short and I really want to see a hit for her and this team looks like there’s a chance to deliver. A great spy story is perfect while playing to the characters strengths with a few twists thrown in, no reason to make it overly complicated that you lose everyone along the way.
Strange Adventures #5> Mr. Terrific is back on Earth, and he’s making things hot for Adam Strange-but he also might get a little burned himself! The conflict is out in the open now, and the court of public opinion doesn’t play fair. Mr. Terrific was picked to investigate the accusations against Adam Strange because he was the most impartial member of the Justice League-but can even he keep all of this from getting personal? Plus, as we witness more of Adam’s adventures in outer space, will his version of events jibe with the facts, or will they continue to drift further apart? Find out in the series everyone is talking about by one of the most acclaimed creative teams in comics! (S) Tom King (A) Evan Shaner, Mitch Gerads
Smurfs Take> A superbly crafted story with the most surprising cast of characters as DC plays to its strengths yet again. The skill they have of taking their lesser known heroes and building this thrill ride for the reader to go on with them never gets old. Have to say, didn’t know I wanted this story, wasn’t expecting it to be this good, but enjoying every issue with childlike enthusiasm.
Empyre #6> Who will rule the EMPYRE?
There can be only one King of Space-and it’s the last liege standing! But as combat rages on, the clock ticks down to catastrophe! Will the ultimate interstellar weapon fry planet Earth before or after all sentient life on the planet is wiped out? The Avengers and the Fantastic Four are tested as never before-as EMPYRE comes to a pulse-pounding finish! (S) Al Ewing, Dan Slott (A) Valerio Schiti (CA) Jim Cheung
Marvel Zombies Resurrection #1> THE MARVEL ZOMBIES RISE AGAIN!
When the corpse of Galactus reaches planet Earth carrying a cannibalistic virus, Spider-Man and a ragtag group of heroes struggle to save survivors and uncover the truth! (S) Phillip Kennedy Johnson (A) Leonard Kirk (CA) Inhyuk Lee
Smurfs Take> Wellll, sure why not. The one thing I enjoy the most about these kind of stories is who they take out and how. It’s like watching the old 80’s horror films betting on who goes next and who makes it to the end of the story. Yes they have beaten this storyline to death but they might surprise you with something a little different and should be just a fun read.
Doctor Who Time Lord Victorious #1> A thrilling new adventure for the Tenth Doctor (as played by fan-favorite David Tennant) that sees the shocking return of his deadliest enemies: the Daleks! But things aren’t what they seem – time is all wrong, and something is coming that terrifies even the Daleks… The first of two oversized issues kicking off the BBC’s highly anticipated multi-platform Doctor Who epic, Time Lord Victorious! (S) Jody Houser (A) Roberta Ingranata (CA) Lee Binding
Smurfs Take> Yes, I’m aware this makes six, and I know a lot of people are not a big on Doctor Who. This however is something I think is a rather bold undertaking as this launches their cross media story I have been talking about on the podcast assembling all of the different Doctors for one large quest. I love the idea, I love the concept, and I really think this is going to be something specular.
