Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay for some delayed for others, be sure to check with your local shop before heading in to see if everything is in. To avoid the worry of missing anything you should set up a hold slot with our sponsor All C’s Collectibles today. Plenty to read, plenty to see, and here are Smurfs Top 5 to get you started.

Punchline #1> Spinning out of the pages of “The Joker War” comes the first solo book starring the blockbuster new character Punchline. As she faces the consequences for her role in “The Joker War,” the story of how Alexis Kaye became Punchline will take Leslie Thompkins, Harper Row, and Cullen Row on a harrowing journey that reveals a fringe teenager’s radicalization to the ideology of a madman. It’s a terrifying tale so big it demanded an oversize special issue! (S)Sam Johns (A) Mirka Andolfo

Smurfs Take> Lots of covers on this issue, but great covers does not guarantee a good story underneath. I’m curious about the character sure, same as everyone after the ruckus she caused in Joker War but is it too soon. I like the mystery a little bit more than actually knowing the story at the moment and fear DC is rushing this a little bit. It took forever for us to get anything solid on Harley but I thinking knowing too much sabotages the character. I might be the only one that thinks this way and yes I will be picking it up but just might wait on reading it just yet.

Strange Academy #5> The founding of the Strange Academy came with some gigantic risks. So far the students and teachers haven’t felt the sting of those risks. That changes this issue.
Something horrible is bubbling up in the bayous outside New Orleans and the students of Strange Academy are going to have to wade in and uncover an evil that they are not ready to handle. (S) Skottie Young (A/CA) Humberto Ramos

Smurfs Take> This is a great title! An incredible job from Skottie and Ramos that has all the right feels of comics from back in the day with a mix of fresh and new.  I could go on a long list of just how great this title is but instead just pick it up and see for yourself.

Hellboy & The BPRD The Seven Wives Club #1> The team behind the Eisner Award-winning one-shot Hellboy: Krampusnacht spins a new ghostly yarn! Hellboy comes to the aid of a young girl whose ghost hunt goes wrong, and a visit to an abandoned medical school reveals sinister layers to a grisly, long-ago murder. Stolen cadavers, vengeful spirits, and more abound in this one-shot.
Hellboy creator Mike Mignola reunites with fan-favorite artist Adam Hughes for a spirit-fueled scream fest sure to excite old and new fans alike! (S) Mike Mignola (A/CA) Adam Hughes

Smurfs Take> A special treat this week for sure, feels like forever since Adam Hughes did a book. I really look forward to these issues, reminds me of the old school horror comics I loved as a kid. This is story telling at it’s best, without a doubt.

Iron Man #3> Tony Stark is getting tired of apologizing for being himself, especially when as Iron Man he’s more powerful than most any other human being on Earth. As he wears himself out trying to do everything he can to be a force of good in the world, he’s beginning to chafe at the idea that he really owes anybody anything. Is it too much to ask for a thank you? He’s trying to keep his head down and his ego in check, but when KORVAC reveals himself as the puppet master behind Stark’s latest investment, Tony will at least have somewhere to channel his anger and frustration… That is, if he survives the conflict at all. (S) Christopher Cantwell (A) CAFU (CA) Alex Ross

Smurfs Take> It has been a long time, and I mean long time since I enjoyed and Iron Man title this much. The look, the feel, and Tony. No overly complex plots, simplified armor, and solid character driven story. Now this is the Superior Iron Man

Or at least that’s what the whole world thinks. Now the greatest spies in the business are hunting him down and won’t stop until Taskmaster is dead or clears his own name! Follow JED MACKAY (BLACK CAT) and ALESSANDRO VITTI (SECRET WARRIORS) on a globe-spanning adventure that will send ripples through every corner of the Marvel Universe’s espionage community! (S) Jed MacKay (A) Alessandro Vitti (CA) Valerio Giangiordano

Smurfs Take> Seems like the exact opposite of Punchline here. It’s been a long road to get here for Taskmaster and it’s been a good payoff. The last series had me really sympathizing for the character as they finally explained his powers and the side effects of them. High hopes for this story, can’t wait.
