Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay and what treasure awaits us on the shelves this week? Smurf has his picks and thoughts to get you started and don’t forget Daredevil, Modok, and Far Sector this week as well. The #Top5 are sponsored by All C’s Collectibles who is offer cash for your unwanted collectables if you’re looking for space or just a little extra for the holiday season. Now, on with the hits.

Batman/Catwoman #1> At last, Tom King returns to the rocky, romantic saga of Batman and Catwoman with his Heroes in Crisis collaborator, superstar artist Clay Mann! Echoing plot points from King’s epic Batman run, this sweeping tale is told across three timelines: the past, when the Bat and the Cat first fell in love; the present, where their union is threatened by one of Batman’s lost loves; and the future, where the couple have a happy life and legacy-including their daughter Helena, the Batwoman. And as the story begins, after a long marriage, Bruce Wayne passes away-which frees Selina Kyle to settle an old score. At every stage of their relationship, Bruce and Selina have an unwelcome chaperone: The Joker! Oh, and that lost love of Bruce’s? It’s Andrea Beaumont-a.k.a. Phantasm. Just thought you’d want to know. (S) Tom King (A) Clay Mann

Smurfs Take> At long last Mask of the Phantasm is officially added to Batman cannon. I thought I might be a little worn out on Joker stories at this point but I’m will to read one more. I love the film back in the day and a chance to revisit it and maybe fill in a few details is great, along with the bat and the cat finally getting together.

Hellboy & BPRD Her Fatal Hour> Gone, but not forgotten!
Years after Hellboy’s ill-fated tangle with the Beast of Vargu, the Romani women who helped him need that debt repaid. Claimed by a demon in a romance gone wrong, the younger woman reaches out to Hellboy through the power of a familiar old puppet, and a supernatural confrontation full of magic and mayhem ensures! In a second short story, Hellboy goes head to head with a phantom who is looking for an object completely unknown to the living people the ghost is terrorizing.
Master of horror Mike Mignola is joined by artist extraordinaire Tiernen Trevallion and award-winning colorist Dave Stewart to bring you the follow-up to smash Hellboy hit “The Beast of Vargu”! (S) Mike Mignola (A/CA) Tiernen Trevallion

Smurfs Take> This is spectacular! I’m excited to see what has gone on since last we left the story and really enjoying Mikes approach with his story telling the last few stories. Solid hit.

King in Black #1> DARKNESS REIGNS!
After a campaign across the galaxy, Knull’s death march arrives to Earth and, worse yet, he hasn’t come alone! With an army of hundreds of thousands of symbiote dragons at his command, the King in Black is a force unlike any Earth’s heroes have ever faced. EDDIE BROCK, A.K.A. VENOM has seen firsthand the chaos that even one of Knull’s symbiotic monsters can wreak – will he survive an encounter with the God of the Abyss himself?
From Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin and VC’s Clayton Cowles comes the definitive chapter in their two-year-long VENOM saga that changed everything you thought you knew about symbiotes! (S) Donny Cates (A/CA) Ryan Stegman

Smurfs Take> I have eagerly waited for this story and as much as I love a good build up can’t wait to dive into this. At last, more on the Symbiotes story that has been thought out and shows them as the real danger they are especially when they are driven by the king. So much story, so much destruction, just so excited.

Thor #10> THE DARK PRISON OF DONALD BLAKE!
For years Doctor Donald Blake has wandered a land far from Midgard, the place he once thought home. Now he has returned to the Ten Realms – but it is not the place it was, nor he the man who once shared a body with a god. New terrors await in what is perhaps Donny Cates’ darkest story yet! (S) Donny Cates (A) Nic Klein (CA) Olivier Coipel

Smurfs Take> Well didn’t see this coming. I guess I should have known better as every issue has been one great twist after another. Absolutely top shelf story telling on this title and looking forward to seeing where all of this is leading.

Strange Adventures #7> Adam Strange was right! In this issue guest-starring Batman, the Pykkts have come to Earth, and they plan to claim the planet as their own. Earth’s greatest heroes have faced alien invasions before, but they’re about to learn that the Pykkts are more formidable, more determined, and more deadly than any invading force they’ve faced before. Only Adam Strange has ever defeated them, but it nearly cost him everything-including his own sanity! How did he survive? Mr. Terrific will need to uncover that secret if humanity is going to survive! (S) Tom King  (A) Evan Shaner, Mitch Gerads

Smurfs Take> One of the surprise hits of the year for me that exceeded all expectations. Characters that are great to read, a well developed and expanding story that delvers every month. This is the title I recommend to everyone who ask’s what I’m reading these days.
