Writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Murder Falcon) and colorist Mike Spicer take Beta Ray Bill on a journey beyond the shadow of a god! Plus: This oversize first issue contains an exclusive conversation between Johnson and Beta Ray Bill’s creator, the legendary Walter Simonson! (S) Daniel Warren Johnson (A/CA) Daniel Warren Johnson
Smurfs Take> One of the best characters to come out of the 80’s! I know he will never get his own monthly title and it’s moments like this that just toy with me but I will dream none the less. I know the cosmic characters can be a challenge to write but I know with the right approach Bill could kill it. I know there’s space on the Guardians team. Also excited to read the interview with Simonson in the last pages of the issue.
Silk #1> By day Cindy Moon is an intrepid reporter for the upstart new media empire Threats & Menaces under her old boss, J. Jonah Jameson. By night, she’s Silk, crime fighting super hero! But those worlds are about to collide, as an investigation into a series of gangland murders puts Silk and everyone she loves in danger! Who is this powerful new player in New York’s underworld, where did she come from, and what is she doing with that strange cat demon? It will take all of Cindy’s prowess as reporter and hero to find the answers…and stay alive! Written by Maurene Goo (I Believe in a Thing Called Love) and drawn by Takeshi Miyazawa (RUNAWAYS, GHOST SPIDER), Cindy is on assignment, and nothing can stop her! (S) Maurene Goo (A) Takeshi Miyazawa (CA) Stonehouse
Smurfs Take> One of the newer characters to come out of the Spiderverse that I think should get more story time. I think the potential for the character is huge and would love to see them expand past the Spider-Man connection.
Crossover #5> “KIDS LOVE CHAINS,” Part Five-Finally… it’s all come to this. What awaits our heroes at ground zero? What is the nefarious Father Lowe up to in that basement of his? Who the hell is narrating this book? Where am I? What’s happening?? Find out… in “KIDS LOVE CHAINS,” Part Five! (S) Donny Cates (A/CA) Geoff Shaw, Dee Cunniffe, John J. Hill
Smurfs Take> At long last, we get some of the big answers. Questions from the first issue not to mention ones I have built up along the way are going to get filled in. I think Donny has outdone himself with this series, an absolutely crazy idea that has been a blast breaking all the rules. Bit hit!
Strange Adventures #9> The Pykkts are attacking Earth. As the only warrior in all the cosmos to ever defeat them, Adam Strange leads the planet’s mightiest heroes in all-out war! The only thing is, evidence is mounting that Adam’s victory on Rann may not have been everything he says it was. There is time unaccounted for, circumstances left unexplained. Even Batman has started to wonder about his friend. Sure, they are fighting side by side right now, but who will answer for all the things that got them here? Why, Alanna Strange, of course! It’s time for the Rannian princess to go out and set the record straight. The hit series continues on a bimonthly schedule. (S) Tom King (A) Evan “Doc” Shaner, Mitch Gerads
Smurfs Take> I might not enjoy King’s Batman run but this on the other hand has been terrific. The direction, the characters, the whole thing has been an absolute pleasure every month. It has captured what in my mind is the heart of comics and continues to pull me I with every issue.
Avengers Curse of the Man-Thing> BURN AT THE TOUCH OF THE HARROWER!
Critically acclaimed writer Steve Orlando (Martian Manhunter, Batman, Wonder Woman) makes his Marvel debut with a blockbuster celebration of MAN-THING’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY! For decades, the Man-Thing has haunted the Florida Everglades. Now a new enemy has hijacked his body on a quest to take his incendiary abilities global! We wake to fear as gargantuan monoliths menace cities worldwide, with only the AVENGERS standing between the population of Earth and a planetwide inferno. Can they save Man-Thing in time to douse the fires? And does the man inside the thing, TED SALLIS, even want to be saved? Introducing a sensational new villain, THE HARROWER! PART 1 of 3! (S) Steve Orlando (A) Francesco Mobili (CA) Daniel Acuna
Smurfs Take> I know this might sound like blasphemy to some but I like Man-Thing more than his DC counterpart Swamp Thing. Yes, both do carry the horror element very well and are defenders of the Earth and all. Maybe it’s because Man-Thing really cant talk? I just love the idea that he’s a big lump of grass with eyes walking around setting people on fire because of their fear. I thought it was amazing when they made him a Thunderbolt and hoped they would use him a little more than a transport system. He was one of the first books I pick up as a kid and I’m sure that plays into the allure of the character but this should be just a good read.
