Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay I usually have a much easier time picking my #top5 but this week was just down right hard. There’s a lot of titles that have my attention for one reason or another from story, art, and just curious what’s it all about. On top of all those choices a ton of must read trades also landed as I give you a couple of choices you don’t want to miss out on. All of this incredible insight is sponsored by All C’s Collectibles who has two locations now and ready to assist with your comic needs, set up a pull file and get a discount on the these titles and more. In the mean time I’ve got five stacked high ready to fly:

The Me You Love in the Dark #2> Artist Ro, hiding out in an old house, hoping for artistic lightning to strike, begins to feel even more strongly connected with the shadowy presence she’s been communicating with.
Writer SKOTTIE YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND, Deadpool, Strange Academy) and artist JORGE CORONA (NO. 1 WITH A BULLET, Super Sons, Feathers) follow up their critically acclaimed series MIDDLEWEST with a brand-new haunting tale. Fans of STEPHEN KING and NEIL GAIMAN will enjoy this beautiful, dark, and disturbing story of discovery, love, and terror. (S) Skottie Young  (A) Jorge Corona

Smurfs Take> Spectacular first issue and ready for more as this creative team hits the cheap seats yet again. If you missed the first issue find it, and pick this up so you don’t miss out on what will be an amazing story everyone will be talking about.

Black Manta #1> Following his appearance in the Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular, the scourge of the seas now gets his own series. Black Manta is chasing a rare metal with incredible powers, and he’s not the only one who wants to get his hands on it, friend and foe alike! Torrid is a former ally who has escaped hell (literally!) to answer the call of the metal, but can Manta trust her? Hopefully so because he might need her help to fend off Devil Ray, a new competitor for the role of the biggest villain underwater. INTRODUCING NEW HERO TORRID AND VILLAIN DEVIL RAY! (S) Chuck Brown (A) Valentine De Landro

Smurfs Take> I have loved this character since the old Super Friends cartoons on Saturday morning. Didn’t really know anything about him back then but it didn’t matter with the cool helmet and unique voice. Today it’s different, and I know a great deal about the character and I have to applaud younger Me’s tastes for sure. Excited to see the character do something other than mess with Aquaman and see the full range of his capabilities.

Daredevil #34> “LOCKDOWN” CONTINUES AS BULLSEYE REIGNS OVER NYC!
The penultimate chapter of “Lockdown” brings twists, turns, bodies and unexpected allies.
You’re not going to want to miss THE NEXT INSTALLMENT OF THIS EISNER-NOMINATED EPIC! (S) Chip Zdarsky (A) Stefano Landini (CA) Marco Checchetto

Smurfs Take> Holy Crap! So freaking good and really excited for this issue as we finally get Bullseye without restrictions. So much going on in this story hard to focus on just one point but damn good and you need this.

Star Wars War of the Bounty Hunters #4> THE WAR CONTINUES!
The true machinations of the theft of HAN SOLO from BOBA FETT become clear, as one-time love of Solo QI’RA has returned her terrifying criminal organization, CRIMSON DAWN, to the galaxy.
Qi’ra used Han to bring the most powerful players in the galaxy together, and now the pieces are moving toward their endgame. DARTH VADER, LUKE SKYWALKER, LEIA ORGANA, VALANCE, APHRA, THE HUTTS – all are vying for the ultimate prize, while Boba Fett’s stuck in the middle, a simple man just trying to get what’s his! (S) Charles Soule (A) Luke Ross (CA) Steve McNiven

Smurfs Take> So many things going on and a bit of a couple added twists that I’m not sure I like or can get behind but this has been a great event. Perfect blend of old and new to satisfy all of the fans makes for a perfect read and excited to see how they wrap it all up.

Green Lantern #6> Far Sector’s Jo Mullein goes head-to-head with one-time Green Lantern Sinestro, now the leader of the Sinestro Corps that harnesses the yellow light of fear. But as Jo deals with Sinestro, Simon Baz finds out his former partner, Jessica Cruz, just joined the Yellow Lanterns as the Corps’ newest member. Then, in deep space, Kilowog, who’s been cut from the Corps, fights for his life in the Dark Sectors. But without a working ring, he may not stand much of a chance of survival. (S) Geoffrey Thorne (A) Tom Raney, Marco Santucci

Smurfs Take> I know I have made fun of the weird loop DC has been in as they break the power battery yet again but I can’t argue with the results. The mystery of it all still just out of reach as the Corp deal with the sudden loss of their power and try and survive. It’s been a very interesting take on a recycled idea and a few new elements that just didn’t exists before to raise the stakes. I don’t know how long this will last, but right now this is fantastic!

Cuphead TP Vol 2 Cartoon Chronicles & Calamities> Our plucky heroes return in this brand-new collection of adventures starring Cuphead, Mugman, and now Ms. Chalice! The trio can’t seem to catch a break as they find themselves in a plethora of peculiar positions and side stories in the all-cartoon magical wonderworld of the Inkwell Isles! This original graphic novel features fresh new tales, all authentically drawn to match the glorious and vintage animation style of Cuphead! (S) Zack Keller (A/CA) Shawn Dickinson

Smurfs Take> One of the more difficult sides scrolling games to come along in awhile I was sold on the art, gameplay, story, and absolutely the characters. The style of the art the worked so well for the game play fit’s even better in a printed format and continuing the story  this way is perfect. A must have for the gamer and comic fan alike.

Deep Beyond Vol 1 TP> In an underpopulated future Earth, devastated by the dire consequences of the millennium bug, the survival of mankind—and, maybe, of the planet itself—is handled by a small number of people. These are talented scientists who, despite the adverse situation and the stupid feuds that continue to divide the small number of people still alive, try to understand and study what is hidden in the depths of the abyss—something mysterious and dangerous, which could eventually cause an even worse and more destructive catastrophe!
The 100 meets LOW, with a hint of Death Stranding in the brand-new sci-fi thriller series from acclaimed creator MIRKA ANDOLFO (UNNATURAL, MERCY, SWEET PAPRIKA), teaming up with writer DAVID GOY, rising-star artist ANDREA BROCCARDO (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Empyre: X-Men), and colorist BARBARA NOSENZO (The Ballad of Halo Jones).
Collects DEEP BEYOND #1-6

Smurfs Take> I try to keep it to one trade when possible for my pick’s but this one had to get added for this week. A must read for sure with a great blend of scifi/horror and just overall story checked a lot of boxes for me. Something different and a well crafted story as Image delivers another hit.
