Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay returns with some spectacular choices this week. Hard not to notice that it’s November already and looks like the publishers want to finish strong offering up some impressive stories, art, and things just outside of the box. All C’s Collectibles who have all of these titles and more sponsoring Smurf’s #top5 picks of the week. Be sure to visit one of their two locations, for now we have five stacked high ready to fly:

The Me You Love in the Dark #4> As Ro’s isolation takes a turn toward the dark, a series of events reveals more of the true nature of her mysterious companion.

Writer SKOTTIE YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND, Deadpool, Strange Academy) and artist JORGE CORONA (NO. 1 WITH A BULLET, Super Sons, Feathers) follow up their critically acclaimed series MIDDLEWEST with a brand-new haunting tale. Fans of Stephen King and Neil Gaiman will enjoy this beautiful, dark, and disturbing story of discovery, love, and terror.  (S) Skottie Young (A) Jorge Corona

Smurfs Take> This has everything an old EC horror comic has and more. Compelling story, dark and suspenseful with art that brings the story off the page giving it a life of it’s own.

Strange Academy Presents Death of Doctor Strange #1> Strange Academy is closed until the events surrounding Dr. Strange’s death are resolved, so the students go back to their parents! Iric and Alvi’s mom happens to be the Enchantress, so you know this isn’t going to go smoothly. We’re going to learn that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and more than just one realm is in trouble. (S) Skottie Young (A) Michael Del Mundo (CA) Humberto Ramos

Smurfs Take> I was wondering if they were going to address Strange’s death in this title. I know the whole thing is a bit gimmicky and has been done before, just curious on the impact to the story. I know Strange hasn’t in the book a whole lot to this point, just mainly for some cryptic conversations and then leaves. The one thing I hate the most about these crossovers is it distracting from the main story, and perhaps this feeds into it and there’s no reason for concern. I’m curious which way this will go to be honest.

Dark Knights of Steel #1> An entire medieval world will be forever changed when a spaceship crash-lands from a doomed planet. Monarchs will die, kingdoms will rise, and what seemed the end of the world for many…was only the beginning! An epic high-fantasy story set in a DC Universe where nothing is what it seems…From worldwide bestselling writer Tom Taylor (DCeased, Superman: Son of Kal-El) and acclaimed artist Yasmine Putri comes a generational tale of good and evil within a brand-new DCU! (S) Tom Taylor (A) Yasmine Putri

Smurfs Take> This looks great and has all the right feel’s of an Elseworld and 1602 style story. It’s always fun to see these style of stories with established characters and I have missed the Elseworld title, all the characters no lasting consequences just a good story.

Hellboy Bones of Giants #1> When a startling discovery is made in Sweden, the B.P.R.D. sends Hellboy and Abe Sapien to investigate. What ensues is a wild adventure full of Norse legends, mythical creatures, and a threat that could bring not just Earth but the Nine Realms of Norse mythology to their knees.

Based on the illustrated novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, this four-part comics adaptation of Hellboy: The Bones of Giants brings readers into Hellboy’s fight against the Frost Giants with stunning art by Matt Smith (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Long Night at Goloski Station, Barbarian Lord, Folklords) and colors by Chris O’Halloran (Folklords, Black Panther, Ice Cream Man). (S) Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden (A/CA) Matt Smith

Smurfs Take> More Hellboy the better in my mind and expanding on an already existing story is even better. Can’t wait to dive in!

Arkham City: The Order of the World #2> The Joker’s attack on Arkham Asylum left the long-standing Gotham establishment in ruin, most of the patients killed or missing, and only a handful of surviving staff-a few nurses, a gravely injured security guard, and one doctor. In the chaos of the assault, it is believed that several of the asylum’s patients escaped and scurried off into the dark nooks and crannies of Gotham City. Now, these Arkhamites walk among us, and it’s up to the Asylum’s one remaining doctor, Jocasta Joy, to round up her former patients. Meet these Arkhamites: a woman with no face, a pyggy in search of perfection, a man who feels nothing and burns everything, a woman who must devour life to save herself, a man unfit for the waking world who looks instead for Wonderland, a body with more than one soul, a being unbound from time who lives in the present and the past, a boy who seeks the comfort of vermin, and the twisted man who sees them all for who they are. And witness the avenging angel who stalks them. This fall, join writer Dan Watters and artist Dani on an odyssey through the deepest depths and darkest shadows of Gotham City and find all-new reasons to fear the night. (S) Dan Watters (A) Dani Strips

Smurfs Take> The first issue was remarkable and excited to see something involving the villains of Gotham without involving the bat. It’s something different, something fresh, and has an edge of mystery to the whole thing that I loved.

Reeling from the events on JEKARA and forced to confront the reality of her own choices and losses, LEIA ORGANA meets QI’RA to discuss the person they both have in common – heroic smuggler HAN SOLO! How has he influenced their lives to that point? And how will it change their fate moving forward? (S) Charles Soule (A) Ramon Rosanas (CA) Carlo Pagulayan

Smurfs Take> I know this makes six choices but it’s worth talking about simply it’s the one thing I have looked forward to since the Solo movie. The classic story of when the girlfriend meets the ex.

The Joker Vol. 1> Following the events of Infinite Frontier #0 and The Joker War, The Joker gets targeted as the most wanted man in the world! But the Clown Prince of Crime is several steps ahead of law enforcement-and he’s on the run overseas. James Gordon, facing retirement, realizes this is the manhunt of his life and the last piece of a storied career…but what mysterious and deadly forces are also in pursuit of The Joker? THE JOKER VOL. 1 collects THE JOKER #1-6 (S) Matthew Roseberg (A) Francesco Francavilla, Guillem March

Smurfs Take> A must have trade for sure! If you have been waiting to read these all at once or not interested in the Punchline backup story this is the trade for you. It’s a great read and I think Joker as he should be as we get to see what laying low means to the Clown Prince of Crime while being chased. It’s perfect!
