Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay it’s a great day to be a comic book enthusiast!  A few days before Christmas and what better way to say “I love you” than with comics. If you’re not too sure what comics, perhaps a gift card from our sponsor All C’s Collectibles if you don’t see something in this weeks #Top5 #Mustread from Smurf, we got five stacked high ready to fly….and have a happy holidays:

Batman: One Dark Knight #1> When a simple GCPD escort goes sideways, Batman finds himself on the wrong end of Gotham City in the middle of a heat wave with a super-villain in tow. Follow Batman as he traverses block by block across a pitch dark Gotham City while dragging a highly difficult E.M.P. to his permanent home at Blackgate Prison. The dark corners of Gotham City contain many surprises…and E.M.P. plans to deliver many more shocks before the night is through! (S) Jock (A) Jock

Smurfs Take> I like the Black Label stuff DC has been producing, little edgy with an interesting twist. Granted most of it has been Bat-Focused with a few other titles thrown in but compelling and non-cannon threating. I like the idea of this story even if I have seen a few versions of it on the big screen (cough cough 12 blocks cough cough). But I admire trying to tell a different Batman story while staying true to the character, and I really do miss LOTDK style stories.

Hellboy Silver Lantern Club #3> Reliving old stories with Hellboy and Professor Bruttenholm, Simon Bruttenholm recalls the strange tale of a woman whose synesthetic visions revealed the presence of a mysterious and malevolent entity. What ensues is a hair-raising confrontation worthy of the Silver Lantern Club’s finest! (S) Mike Mignola, Chris Roberson (A) Ben Stenbeck (CA) Mike Mignola (A/CA) Christopher Mitten

Smurfs Take> This has been brilliant! This year has been one solid hit after hit for Hellboy without a doubt. All of the right elements for some great stories, getting your Hellboy fix, and keeping the title alive. This is no exception as we get a deep dive on the Silver Lantern Club, which I thought would never happen and other stories as a bonus. A must for horror and Hellboy fans alike!

Star Wars Darth Vader #19> DARK ORDER! In the bowels of Bespin, DARTH VADER told his son he wanted to bring order to the galaxy. Now Vaders’ promise is put to the test as he leads an unlikely crew of heroes and assassins against the criminal organization known as CRIMSON DAWN. What does “order” mean to a DARK LORD OF THE SITH? How far will he go to fight for it as the depth of Crimson Dawns’ infiltration becomes clearer? And what fate awaits the heroes who follow him into battle? (S) Greg Pak (A) Guiu Vilanova

Smurfs Take> At last, more on Crimson Dawn and them clashing with Vader is an extra joy filled title of geeking out. Excited to see how they pull all of this together from the film and all of the recent stories and wondering if they will pull from any of the old Dark Horse material.

King Conan #1> CONAN’S LAST STAND AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD! Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar return to the saga of CONAN in an all-new adventure that takes the story of the Cimmerian further than has ever been revealed in ANY media to date! As Robert E. Howard posited, when King Conan grows restless on the throne, he sails west, toward land and adventure unknown. Now see the first step of King Conan’s fateful journey from Aquilonia, as an old and terrible danger threatens to end the saga of the Cimmerian once and for all! Don’t dare miss the first issue of the adventure of a lifetime! (S) Jason Aaron (A) Mahmud Asrar

Smurfs Take> Now we get the rest of the story! I have thought in the back of my mind the Marvel has been wasting the Conan IP. They got it back simply just to have it, put a few issues out and then let it sit. But when I see something like this it renews my faith in Marvel as a publisher and ready for the next big adventure. I know you can only tell so many stories without repeating and exploring the same character point but this is the one I have always wanted to see.

Iron Man #15> IRON MAN HAS BECOME THE IRON GOD! Only trouble is Korvac has once again become cosmic as well. Their conflict now spills out across the universe as both newly nigh-invincible entities vie for absolute dominance. What does it look like when two massive egos with celestial-sized abilities duke it out? What kind of havoc does it cause as they tear through galaxies and dimensions? And how can a handful of tiny humans stop them in hope of saving their old friend Tony Stark? (S) Christopher Cantwell (A) Ibraim Roberson

Smurfs Take> Hard to believe that we are already at issue 15 and this has just blazed by with a great story and some fun expected developments and characters. This really has been a classic Iron Man fans dream come true while exploring the Tony we know and love today. No avengers, no support, just a guy in a suit making it work as he goes….spectacular.
