#NewComicsDay and it’s a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! A load of number one issues hit the shelves today at your local comic shop. Which ones will be future gems is difficult to say but Smurf is here with his take on the top 5 must read of the week. Don’t forget to take a look at X-Men Red, She Hulk, and Mirror War all available at our sponsors two locations All C’s Collectibles. Now we’ve got five stacked high ready to fly:
Batman Beyond: Neo-Year #1> Neo-Gotham is alive and has killed Bruce Wayne. It’s rejected Terry McGinnis as Batman and offered him the chance to escape. Terry turned it down—he is the city’s protector, and he will uphold the legacy of Batman. Now Neo-Gotham will do everything in its power to destroy Terry, including creating brand-new villains to fight him. Terry’s first year without Bruce Wayne begins…does he have a fighting chance? From the rising-star creative team of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (Kang the Conqueror) and Max Dunbar (Batman: Urban Legends, Robin), a new future for Batman Beyond has begun! (S) Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly (A) Max Dunbar
Smurfs Take> The last Batman Beyond series wasn’t bad, I actually enjoyed it. The problem I have and I’m not alone on this is he always feels like the forgotten Batman. Just left out in the cold, an afterthought that is tossed to the fan’s every so often to keep them quiet. If DC really wanted to build a “Future State” it should really start here. I’m excited to see what this next chapter for the character looks like with the loss Bruce, similar to the loss of Alfred I assume.
Little Monsters #2> The thrilling new series by Eisner Award-winning team JEFF LEMIRE & DUSTIN NGUYEN (DESCENDER, ASCENDER, Robin & Batman) continues, as more is revealed about the young vampires left to survive on their own. When a man stumbles into their camp, the long-forgotten taste of human blood is quickly remembered. (S) Jeff Lemire (A) Dustin Nguyen
Smurfs Take> Issue one was an amazingly haunting start to a story that I can see only pulling the reader in further as it moves along. Soooo many possibilities on where this story can go but an impressive start.
Marauders #1> NEW TEAM! NEW VILLAINS! NEW MYSTERIES! Captain Pryde and the Marauders are rededicating themselves to rescuing mutants, wherever they may be, and no matter how dangerous the odds against them are. But Captain Pryde’s crew is not yet complete! Against her better judgment, Pryde comes face-to-face with the final Marauder: Cassandra Nova! One of the most infamous villains in mutant history might be the Marauders’ only chance to unravel a mystery stretching two billion years into the past! (S) Steve Orlando (A) Eleonora Carlini
Smurfs Take> The first thing I thought of when I saw this was Uncanny X-Men #153; taking a single issue and building an entire title around it. I’m not opposed to this and that is one of my favorite classic X-Men stories. The X-books could use something different but still with that old familiar feel to it since the last few stories I feel have landed flat while the X-Men try and find their identity. I like the lineup and I’m in for at least three issues.
Spider-Punk #1> SPIDER-PUNK GETS HIS OWN SERIES! HOBIE BROWN is THE ANARCHIC SPIDER-PUNK — set to protect EARTH-138 with his ax in hand and his chaotic band of punk rockin’ heroes backing him! NORMAN OSBORN is dead, but will the chaos he’s created be too much for Spider-Punk and gang to handle? Feel the vibes as CODY ZIGLAR (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and JUSTIN MASON bring you the jams when “BANNED IN DC” begins here! (S) Cody Ziglar (A) Justin Mason
Smurfs Take> Well I have to say I never thought I would see this happen, but to be fair I never thought I would get Spider-Ham either. If I’m being completely honest with you, not sure what to expect from this issue much less the whole title. The something different and new is the pull I’m feeling towards this title and curiosity getting the best of me. It could be fun and a surprise hit, and let’s face it that’s part of the reason we all try different titles and continue to read.
Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #22> ALL OUT WAR ON THE STREETS OF CORELLIA! Besieged by an entire syndicate of killers, T’ONGA, BOSSK, TASU LEECH, ZUCKUSS, 4LOM and LOSHA have no choice but to fight their way out through the streets. But will all of the crew make it out of CORONET CITY alive? Meanwhile, DENGAR strikes…and the Underworld may never be the same! (S) Ethan Sacks (A) Paolo Villanelli
Smurfs Take> Love when the bounty hunters can just let loose. This has been a fun read so far and I’m enjoying it a lot more than the main Star Wars title for sure. But this right here feels like a Young Guns shoot out take as many with you as possible while we skin out of town issue. Can’t wait to read it!
