Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay and it’s a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! Smurf’s got his #Top5 must read for the week ready to guide your decision making as you head to the local comic shop. Aided by our sponsor All C’s Collectibles who has a new location for their September 23-25 Fan Expo, the Double Tree Denver 3202 Quebec St. For now we’ve got five stacked high ready fly:

A Town Called Terror #1> “A MESSAGE FROM HOME,” Part One
Henry West is brutally kidnapped in the middle of the night while his wife Julie watches, terrified. Henry awakens to the reality of his whereabouts, but Julie, with no evidence of the phantom crime, is unable to get help to search for him. A new series from the minds of cutting-edge horror creators STEVE NILES (30 Days of Night) and SZYMON KUDRANSKI (SPAWN, The Punisher). (S) Steve Niles (A) Szymon Kudranski

Smurfs Take> This book will not last long on the shelves! It feels like forever since I’ve seen a new horror book from Niles who has yet to disappoint me looks to continue that trend with this epic story. All Image number one’s fly off the shelf as it is and I doubt you will get a second chance to pick this off the shelf if you pass on it today.

Batgirls #5> The Batgirls and Tutor face off again, but this time at the creepy, abandoned Arkham Asylum! Can the Batgirls stop Tutor from using his art to put all of Gotham in a mind-controlled trance? Let’s hope the Batgirls found a way to avoid being put under his control…again! Meanwhile, Babs’s hands are tied-literally-when she comes face to face with Spellbinder. (S) Michael Conrad, Becky Cloonan (A) Jorge Corona

Smurfs Take> This is what I want for a movie or at the very least a HBO Max series like Titans. This has been a joy to read complemented by Jorge’s amazing art is a step beyond most of the DC titles being produced today. Classic feel with an updated look!

Image! #1> Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Image comic with a year-long parade of all-new stories from some of the biggest and best names in comics!

Featuring a combination of ongoing serials and standalone short stories, this inaugural issue kicks off with the first chapters of two 12-part stories: “The Blizzard” by GEOFF JOHNS & ANDREA MUTTI and “Red Stitches” by BRENDEN FLETCHER & BABS TARR—plus the opening installments of a trio of three-parters: “Gospel for a New Century” by WYATT KENNEDY & LUANA VECCHIO, “Loop / Hopeless” by MIRKA ANDOLFO, and “Shift” by KYLE HIGGINS & DANIELE DI NICUOLO. Plus plus! A first look at DECLAN SHALVEY’s upcoming OLD DOG series and an original ongoing comic strip by SKOTTIE YOUNG! (S) Wyatt Kennedy, Mirka Andolfo, Geoff Johns (A) Mirka Andolfo, Declan Shalvey, Daniele Di Nicuolo

Smurfs Take> I’m excited to see how this goes and love the idea of an anthology approach from Image. Some of the best stories of the past few years have been produced by them and a chance to get more I’m all in for. I also believe they are the best ones to execute this properly with the fan’s best interest at heart.

Flashpoint Beyond #0> The world of Flashpoint returns! After sacrificing everything to help the Flash put the universe back together and save Bruce Wayne’s life, Thomas Wayne wakes up in a world he thought was no more. Forced to don the cowl once again, Batman prowls the streets of Gotham searching for answers to how this world still exists, but what he starts to uncover will send him hurtling around the globe. The hunt for the Clockwork Killer starts here! Legendary writer Geoff Johns comes back to the alternate world he created, partnering with prolific artist Eduardo Risso as he returns to the Flashpoint Batman! (S) Geoff Johna (A) Eduardo Risso

Smurfs Take> You had me at Thomas Wayne. One of the few things to come out of the Bat-Books the past few years that I’ve enjoyed the most it was his Batman. I liked how they really fleshed out the character and you can sympathize with his motivation regardless of how dark it might go. I’m also excited to go back to the Flashpoint universe and an updated look of what’s gone on.

Star Wars Darth Vader #22> CRIMSON HAVOC! With all secrets smashed and all traitors revealed, DARTH VADER unleashes his endgame! But is his target CRIMSON DAWN — or the EMPIRE itself? And where does that leave the heroes and assassins who have fought at his side? Plus, a shocking reveal that cuts to the very core of the DARK LORD’S dark heart! (S) Greg Pak (A) Raffaele Ienco

Smurfs Take> At last, we get to see full on Vader mode!

The Sandman Book One> As the story begins, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his 70-year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. On his arduous journey, Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman. Book One collects The Sandman #1-20. (S) Neil Gaiman (A) Michael Zulli, Chris Bachalo, Mike Drengenberg, Sam Kieth

Smurfs Take> A chance to get ready before the series starts on Netflix. One of the best series of all time and a must read for sure. A very easy way to just read the series after the trades have been out of print for a while.
