Meat and Potatoes

Robert Eggers has been called a “visionary Director” and his latest, biggest project yet is “The Northman”. The previews pretty much say it all, but I’m very intrigued to see this film because it has been a while since I’ve seen a good Viking movie.

*The MEAT* The story is *Not What You Expect* because according to the previews, I was expecting a “Lion King” avenge my father and win back his kingdom kind of story. It is not that simple, no it is much deeper than that with a few twists that go great in this film.

*The POTATOES* Alexander Skarsgard, from “Tarzan” and “True Blood” carries this movie very well. Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke gives solid performances here and even William Defoe shows up to play, yet another creepy character again, and does it as only a true creepy guy can. The cast does a good job considering it looks like they were performing in cold conditions for most of the film.

*The VERDICT* “The Northman” was *Pretty Cool” and I liked it very much. Now, I must say that it is not for everyone that is for sure. “The Northman” is bleak, gritty, violent and the subject matter is dark to say the least, but it’s a Viking story and that is what it’s supposed to be. In fact, this is the best Viking movie since “the 13th Warrior” and it will put you in a different place in a different time which is one of the biggest things I love about the movies in general. In fact, the astonishing scenery alone, makes me recommend “The Northman” for the theater experience.
