Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay and it’s a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! Two weeks till the All C’s Fan Expo and we hope to see you there. A loaded week of books with a bunch of number one’s and Smurf has his take on what the must reads for him are. Don’t overlook Spider-Man, Batman Vs. Robin, and Judgment Day as well but for now we’ve got five stacked high ready to fly:

Bone Orchard: Ten Thousand Black Feathers #1> From the acclaimed creative team behind GIDEON FALLS, PRIMORDIAL, and THE PASSAGEWAY comes a new series in the bold and ambitious shared horror universe of THE BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS.Trish and Jackie are best friends and avid gamers. But when the line between reality and their fantasy world is blurred by an evil darkness, can they be the heroes of their own story?TEN THOUSAND BLACK FEATHERS is the newest entry into THE BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS from LEMIRE & SORRENTINO! This universe will feature self-contained graphic novels and limited series about the horrors waiting to be discovered within the Bone Orchard. (S) Jeff Lemire (A) Andrea Sorrentino

Smurfs Take> The last few stories from Jeff have been great and an all-new level in my mind. The last story was exquisite with the balance of horror and heart and ready for the next tale and this looks like another hit.

Midnight Suns #1> Rise of the Midnight Suns! A dark prophesy and apocalyptic new villains with horrifying powers the likes of which Earth has never faced before ordains a team of MIDNIGHT SUNS to rise and tear @#$% up: Magik, Wolverine, Blade, Spirit Rider & Nico Minoru. But what does this new threat have to do with the Sorcerer Supreme’s past? And why is Strange Academy student Zoe Laveau number one on the Suns’ list? (S) Ethan Sacks (A) Luigi Zagaria

Smurfs Take> Not to be confused with the title from the 90’s, this is something new….or is it? There’s a lot of key characters from the first go at this and has pulled a few extra for good measure. I don’t know if we’re potentially looking at another Strange Academy but it’s possible this could be a big hit with the mix of old and new characters. This title warrants at least getting the first three issues no doubt.

Predator #2> Theta crash-lands on a tundra planet, and her odds of surviving are looking slim! Her only hope is to trek through the wilds to the nearest outpost. But the cold isn’t the only thing she has to worry about…as a Predator watches in the shadow, ready to strike! (S) Ed Brisson (A) Kev Walker

Smurfs Take> Alright. You got my attention with the first issue; I won’t try and fake it. Not sure what to expect next and just what direction this title will take, a monster of the week, heavy Sci-Fi tales, hard to say but excited for more.

Daredevil #3> DAREDEVIL SAVES THE WORLD! With more ambitious and aggressive goals than ever before, DAREDEVIL has started putting together a team – but not everyone wants to be a part of Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios’ vision of the future. As Matt and Elektra grow increasingly distant from the super hero community and closer to one another, DAREDEVIL will once again be at odds with heroes and villains alike… (S) Chip Zdarsky (A) Rafael De Latorre

Smurfs Take> Well the first two issues didn’t disappoint and has made a believer out of me for this title. The perfect collision of the last few stories coming together setting the stage for an even bigger epic.

Batgirls #10> Steph has a…date?! With an actual boy? Well this calls for a celebration…or a trip to the zoo! The Batgirls and Steph’s dreamy love interest are in for a day of monkey business but all that monkeying around ends when they’ve got henchmen on their tails! Meanwhile, Babs is one step closer to tracking down the Hill Ripper-too bad all it took was yet another homicide. (S) Michael Conrad, Becky Cloonan (A) Neil Googe

Smurfs Take> I’m enjoying the quirky fun side of the story and the characters who have deserved the spotlight for far too long. The dynamic between all three girls is refreshing while still holding to the detective style of stories we have come to expect from a Bat Family title.

Batman: One Dark Knight TP> It was the sort of mission Batman had run a thousand times. From high above the sweltering summer streets of Gotham, Batman would escort the GCPD as the dangerous metahuman super-villain known as E.M.P. was transferred from a temporary holding cell to his permanent home at Blackgate Prison in Gotham Harbor. E.M.P.’s electrical powers posed a dangerous threat, but the situation was well in hand. Until it wasn’t. Now every light in Gotham is out, the police have been knocked into disarray, and a broken, bleeding Batman must fight his way to Blackgate, block by block, dragging E.M.P. behind him. But it’s not just the gangs who want to make life difficult for him. The dark corners of Gotham contain many surprises…and E.M.P. has many more shocks to deliver before the night is through!

One of the most iconic Batman artists of the 21st century, the incomparable Jock (The Batman Who LaughsBatman: The Black Mirror), has focused all his storytelling powers on the tale of one very, very dark night in Gotham City. It’s always darkest before the dawn—if it ever comes… Collects Batman: One Dark Knight #1-3. (S) Jock (A) Jock

Smurfs Take> If you missed out on this story now your chance for an easy pickup. I loved this story! It felt like the Batman of old style of story complimented with some very clever twists. Definitely a must-read trade!
