Smurfs High Five

#NewComicsDay and it’s a great day to be a comic book enthusiast everyone! The week of number ones as Marvel and DC roll out some interesting new titles and a whole lot of Star Wars to choose from. Smurf is here to help!  Sponsored by All C’s Collectibles who is looking for the new sensational sidekick for the Heckler.  Whoever submits the best design for “Panto Mime” will receive the Cash prize and the love of Heckler. Time is running out! Submit your design today, but for now we’ve got five stacked high ready to fly:

Phantom Road #1> SERIES PREMIEREDom is a long-haul truck driver attempting to stay ahead of his tragic past. When he stops one night to assist Birdie, who has been in a massive car crash, they pull an artifact from the wreckage that throws their lives into fifth gear. Suddenly, a typical midnight run has become a frantic journey through a surreal world where Dom and Birdie find themselves the quarry of strange and impossible monsters. It’s grindhouse horror meeting high-concept supernatural fantasy in the first issue of a bold new series from JEFF LEMIRE (THE BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS, LITTLE MONSTERS) and GABRIEL HERNÁNDEZ WALTA (The Vision, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Old Man Whittier), the Eisner Award-nominated creative team behind the bestselling Sentient series. (S) Jeff Lemire (A) Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Smurfs Take> It seems for me that every story Jeff Lemire has done lately is pure gold. All have been distinctly different but so well put together and invoking one form of emotion or another. This looks terrific and like I said, unlike anything else he’s currently working on. Try it, you’ll like it.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian #8> REDEMPTION! The Mandalorian and his allies come to know their true enemy, who already knows much about them. (S) Rodney Barnes (A) Georges Jeanty

Smurfs Take> New Mando episode and a new issue on the same day, it doesn’t get any better than this. The Final episode for season was perfect and even got me a little with all the feels put into it. I have no doubt the comic will have the same effect as this series has really captured, what I think is the real heart of what Star Wars is all about. Not sure what to expect next after this issue and it really doesn’t matter…..I’m in!

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock VS. The Army of the Dead #6> Stand at attention, cadet! Easy Company’s blasted their way through the undead all across Berlin-but don’t get cocky now, soldier, because your platoon’s just come face-to-face with something far more horrifying than zombies: Sgt. Rock has fallen in battle. Could it be that Easy Company will be sending their fearless leader home in a flag-draped coffin? Check out this fear-soaked finale to find out! (S) Bruce Campbell (A) Eduardo Risso

Smurfs Take> This has been an absolute blast! Campbell makes it look easy as he gives us a story that I never expected and so fun to read. Again, I’ll say it, DC has some of the best “B” list characters around and knows what to do with them. I have no doubt this is going to finish strong, and I hope Campbell returns for another round. Just please give him a better artiest next time.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #1> VENGEANCE REAWAKENED! In a far-flung corner of deep space, Frank Castle has eked out a quiet existence, his days as Cosmic Ghost Rider finally behind him. But across the universe, a vicious bounty hunter is leaving a trail of bodies in his wake and his name is…Cosmic Ghost Rider?! When Frank’s peaceful existence is shattered, he must suit up once more and face his most savage enemy yet – himself! Be there for the start of a sprawling space adventure with shocking twists and turns in the saga of Cosmic Ghost Rider! (S) Stephanie Phillips (A) Juann Cabal, Jonas Scharf

Smurfs Take> Such an odd character and a back story that just makes me laugh. But here we are and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next in the life and times of Frank. I will be the first to admit I wasn’t sold on the character but over time I’ve come to enjoy him or have just been worn down by Marvel. But something different isn’t a bad thing from Marvel and I like they are at least trying.

Rogue & Gambit #1> DESTINY STRIKES YOUR FAVORITE X-MEN DUO! Krakoa is on a precipice. Destiny alone can see what’s coming – but the precog cannot act. For that, she’ll need her adoptive daughter, Rogue. Husbands need not apply…but with mutant duties stealing Rogue away so much these days, Gambit is determined to make the most of the mission and put some Cajun spice back into their increasingly complicated love affair. He just has to make it out of the bar first. Powerhouse writer Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Millie the Spy) joins fan-favorite artist Carlos Gómez (X-Terminators, Amazing Spider-Man) for a thrill ride that’ll lay bare some of Krakoa’s biggest secrets! (S) Stephanie Phillips (A) Carlos Gomez

Smurfs Take> I have always like the two of these characters together and happy to see Marvel trying to keep it that way. The X-Men on the other hand are an absolute mess and hope one day they can get it all sorted. I am enjoying the Sinister storyline going on, something a little different but I feel inspired by some classic stories to help shape a new future. I hope they take advantage of it, but starting a story has never been Marvels problem, they just can’t stick the landing….maybe Destiny can help them with that.
