Meat and Potatoes

I was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed the first “Shazam” movie in fact, I still enjoy it today when I come across it while flipping channels. So naturally I am looking forward to the sequel, “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” and it’s out now.

*The MEAT* The story continues from the first movie with plenty of action and fighting scenes for sure. But unfortunately, that took away from the character’s stories. For example, It would have been nice to see more of the foster family growth and dynamic that was done so well in the first movie.

*The POTATOES* The acting is the same, Zachary Levi plays great at being a kid in a superhero body, but the two antagonists of this movie just didn’t work out at all. Played by Lucy Liu and the great Helen Mirren who, by the way, is completely wasted in this roll. The duo seemed to just coast through their scenes in fact, you can almost see their distain for their dialogue as they perform. So, the acting was a *Waste* for sure.

*The VERDICT* If you like Action, “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” is worth seeing in the theaters, but I will say that it is not as good as the first movie because it lacked all the heart from the character building that made the first film so incredibly enjoyable. See it for the action and fun, but don’t expect anything more than that. Which is a shame, because I would love to see more Shazam in the new DCU universe but I’m afraid this mediocre effort might ruin that.
